Not Your Typical Boutique

Located on the edge of Chapel Hill, Rumors Boutique offers trendy clothing and accessories for shoppers. Casey Longyear and Marshe Wyche originally opened the retail shop in Richmond, Virginia. As kids, Longyear and Wyche loved shopping at thrift stores for their clothes, so the duo created a store where people could create their own personal style by purchasing thrift items. The pair opened the Chapel Hill location in September of 2013.

When the store first opened, it offered locally-designed products and exclusive international indie lines from countries such as South Africa, Colombia, Iceland, Belgium, Finland, Tokyo and France. Now, the store has shifted its focus and offers high-quality, one-of-a-kind thrift pieces at attractively low prices.

Unlike your typical high-end boutique, Rumors specializes in vintage items that have an indie flair to them. As one of the premiere thrift boutiques in the Chapel Hill area, the retailer provides local shoppers with “pre-selected and pre-loved” clothing for men and women. The boutique buys, sells, and trades clothing daily to to ensure a wide selection of items for shoppers.

My favorite part of the store is the extensive range of jewelry at the front counter and the great music you get to hear while shopping!

Selling Your Clothing at Rumors

Rumors only buys items that reflect the current trends and are in-season. In general, the boutique looks for lightly worn, stylish clothing – or unique, vintage pieces. All items should be clean and in good condition.  Defected items will not be accepted. Additionally, if you’re looking to sell items, bring items neatly folded in a bag or box. But don’t get too carried away — there is a limit of three bags or boxes per customer, per visit, unless you call ahead.

Rumors is not a consignment shop, so you will not have to wait for your items to sell before you get cash or store credit. Items are selectively bought and sold daily with no appointment necessary. The inventory is constantly changing and new items for men and women arrive multiple times a day.

The Chapel Hill location takes items daily from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Periodically, the staff will extend these hours depending on inventory demand.
