Almost right after posting this morning’s update about how to help our neighbors recover from this past weekend’s tornado damage, I received the following email from my friend Paula Burke of Burke Brothers Hardware:
My sister, Jamie, lives and teaches in an area of Wake Forest that was destroyed by the tornados. Many of her students and neighborhood families lost everything. Many families were not at home when the storm hit, and they are not even allowed back in their neighborhood/home due to the damages. They aren’t even able to retrieve pictures, clothes, furniture, nothing. Many are still missing their pets 🙁 Can you even imagine?
The families and students are staying in surrounding churches. I will be volunteering this Saturday and will be bringing donations if you would like to help!
The churches are providing showers and are in need of shampoo, conditioner, toilet paper, soap, kid toys, and anything else you can think of that you’d miss if you lost your home. I am trying to put together some “hygiene kits” with travel size soaps, toothbrushes, etc. so it will be easy for individuals to carry as they find new homes.
Or, if you are like me and have limited funds to donate, you can volunteer time to help 🙂
If you have items you’d like to donate we can arrange a “pickup” – or for those of you close to Burke Brothers you can drop them off there.
Donate funds, donate items, or donate your time. Any of those are great!
